Singapore have gained a lot of achievements over the years. But there are consequences if Singapore becomes complacent.
China is not the same "tenuous and hesitant" country 25 years ago when it started diplomatic ties with Singapore. Singapore is now learning from China as much as China is learning from Singapore. Therefore, we must continue to work hard to stay relevant to China by enchancing collaboration such as upgrading the China-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (CSFTA) and exploring third government-to-government project in China. China had caught up to Singapore in terms of economy and might even surpass us due to its talents and resources. There is a statement from Mr Tony Tan, "We could become irrelevant if we do nothing" I agree with this statement, if we start becoming complacent, we would become irrelevant to China and might lose a big trading partner.
From the transcript of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long at Clean and Green Singapore 2015, it is mentioned that in February 2015, there was a drought and water level from the reservoir dropped lower than usual. Thankfully, the desalination plants and NeWater was working at a greater output, it is enough for us not to ration water. Despite this, Singapore should not become complacent in case of another drought that might even last longer than the drought in February in 2015, we cannot depend so much on desalination plants and NeWater.
From these example, we could see the crisis if Singapore were ever complacent. We have to keep adapting consistently to the situations happening around us so Singapore will continue to gain great achievements and succeed.
